Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson (1758–1805), was one of Britain’s most legendary naval commanders, celebrated for his strategic brilliance and fearless leadership. Rising through the ranks of the Royal Navy, he secured a series of crucial victories during the Napoleonic Wars, most famously at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, where he led the British fleet to triumph but was mortally wounded in the process. His tactical genius and enduring legacy have made him a symbol of naval excellence and heroism.

Now, in a fitting tribute to maritime history, artist Kevin Nelson has sculpted a striking wooden figure of Lord Nelson—crafted from none other than the beams salvaged from the basement of Mariner Gallery. With this unique medium, Nelson’s legacy quite literally takes form from the gallery’s foundation, connecting the past to the present through art and craftsmanship.
